Can’t load messaging app on tablet

I recently purchased a Galaxy Tab A. I am trying to set up Message + but I can’t get it to work. It asked for my phone number, which I entered. Then it sent me a QR code and I tried to scan it but it wouldn’t take the code. I think the problem may be due to the fact that the code came from Verizon but my tablet is WiFi only and not registered with Verizon. I had no problem with the app on my old tablet, Galaxy S2, which was also WiFi only. Has something recently changed with the app? Messenger works just fine.
